Vic’s Recovery Story
Vic’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, especially when hope seems lost. After serving in the military, Vic found himself caught in a decades-long battle with addiction, fueled by a painful past and a relentless drive to escape his reality. For 45 years, drugs and alcohol controlled his life, and it all came crashing down when he hit rock bottom—a moment where he nearly ended his life, sitting in a lawn chair with a pistol in his hand. It was the kind of darkness that few escape.
A friend’s intervention — swift, physical, and life-saving — shocked him back into reality. Struck in the head with a 30-pound toolbag, Vic realized he had to make a change.
“God came to me in the form of a 30-pound tool bag. My buddy came in the door. He saw me with a pistol, and he hit me in the head and knocked me out of the chair.”
He reached out to the VA, took a chance, and eventually was admitted to Longbranch Recovery’s veterans addiction treatment program, including their NORA sober living home. NORA, which stands for No One Recovers Alone became a sanctuary for Vic, who was ready to find hope again.
Healing Together: The Power of Camaraderie and Tailored Support
At Longbranch, Vic found more than just a treatment center; he found a community of people who understood him. The program’s staff, many of whom are veterans themselves, provided tailored support that addressed the unique struggles veterans face—trauma, loss, and the difficulty of transitioning back into civilian life. The camaraderie among fellow veterans was immediate and profound; they shared an unspoken bond, a mutual understanding of battles fought both on the field and within.
“I made friends. I hadn’t made friends in a while. I reached out. I stopped fighting,” Vic reflects. “I was 61 years old, and I’ve been fighting all my life. Chaos has been my middle name. I just was tired. I was an old, tired soldier. And so I was able to catch myself and go, look, let’s just try, give it a try.”
Vic’s journey wasn’t always easy. The early days were filled with doubt, anger, and fear, but the structured, supportive environment protected him from his worst impulses. Slowly, he began to trust the process.
“The miracle of the program started to take hold. I realized I had to concede that there was nothing left. It’s either get busy living or get busy dying. And I’m so grateful that I made my choice to start living.”
Finding Purpose, Forgiveness, and Redemption
At Longbranch, Vic rediscovered his purpose and began to heal his fractured relationships. One of the most powerful moments of his recovery came when his son, who had cut ties with him during his addiction, came to visit. It was a day Vic will never forget, a moment that transformed his journey.
“I had one of the most moving, spiritual, coming to Jesus…just tears of flowing tears happened at that facility. And that was the day my son got out of the car. He doesn’t talk much. He’s an action guy. And he brought me a gift of goodwill. And it touched my heart beyond belief. And that was in about the third month. And that was enough to propel. That was a catalyst to really dig in.”
For Vic, this moment of forgiveness was the spark that ignited a deeper commitment to his recovery. It was more than just a visit—it was a second chance at being a father, a chance to mend the broken bonds that addiction had severed.
“When my son and I reconnected, it was a powerful, emotional thing. I realized I wasn’t just doing this for myself anymore; I was doing it for him, too.”
Embracing a New Path of Healing
Today, Vic is sober, rebuilding his life, and embracing a new chapter filled with hope. He wakes up with gratitude, knowing he has a choice—a chance at a life he once thought was impossible.
“Thirteen months ago, I didn’t have a choice. Thirteen months ago, I was broken. I had nothing. I had no family. They didn’t want to talk to me. And life was bleak at best. Today, in recovery, I have a relationship with my son and my daughter. I’ve regained my career. And that sounds cliche, but the one thing I’ve got is peace of mind. It’s so awesome to wake up and see the sky’s blue.”

A Message of Hope for Fellow Veterans
Vic’s message to other veterans struggling with addiction is simple but profound. He understands how difficult it is for veterans to ask for help.
“I’ve got a black belt in that. I really do. And, uh, for me, I had to be half dead and crawl into the facility. I don’t recommend it that way, but what I do know is it just starts with that first step, man. Life is worth living…you know, whether money in the bank, no money in the bank, girlfriend, no girlfriend, boyfriend, whatever.”
Longbranch’s veterans addiction treatment program is not just a path to sobriety; it’s a lifeline that brings veterans back from the brink, helping them rediscover the purpose and strength they’ve always had. For Vic, it was the place where he finally found peace, camaraderie, and a reason to keep going.
Vic’s journey from addiction and hopelessness to a life of purpose and connection is a powerful reminder that even the darkest paths can lead to light. At Longbranch, he learned to let go of destructive patterns, finding solace in the camaraderie of fellow veterans and unwavering support. Today, Vic has reclaimed his life, repaired bonds with his family, and embraced sobriety. His story proves that with resilience, support, and the courage to ask for help, a new beginning is always within reach.
